Aug 28th 'Poor brake performance' from RonnieD ronnie@lawrie61.fsnet.co.uk

Sorry for the delay in sending you this, as promised a while ago.

Recently I noticed while cleaning the calipers that the rubber boot that is at the bottom of the caliper was burst. I decide to replace both of these as even Suzuki couldn't find a way to make a bit of rubber too expensive.   I went into my local dealers (Alvins in Edinburgh) and bought two "insulators" as they are called for £4.56 (Oh yes they can!).

When I came to install them I discovered that the reason it had burst was that it had worn through from the inside due to corrosion inside the hole in the caliper crushing the rubber insulator.

I cleaned this up with a Dremel type tool and fitted the new insulators and lubed the slide pin with Silicon Grease (Maplins Electronics £2.49 for a 50g tube) with the end result that the caliper slides now move with slight finger pressure, as they are supposed too.

Worth checking if your brake performance has dropped off and stops the pads dragging as well.

I also fitted EBC HH pads and what a difference, no more four fingers back to the bar and pray, just two finger stoppies if you are so inclined.

PS Scottoiler replaced my RMV with a new one for no charge even though it was two years old and it only took three days, now that's customer service for you.   Cheers RonnieD  Thanks Ronnie. I overhaul my brakes every 6 months. Much easier to clean and re-grease than having to cleanup corrosion, especially if you have seized pistons or pins. John

Aug 28th from Andrew.Wall@mortgage.wellsFargo.COM  updated 2/9/02.

The picture is taken in Duluth MN which is where my father, the 919 lives. I live in Minnetonka MN, which is a suburb of Minneapolis MN. We ride together quite a bit despite the distance of 175 miles. I usually ride up there to ride on the famous Hwy 61. Hwy 61 rides along the north shore of Lake Superior all the way to Canada. It is a beautiful and exciting ride! Thanks for the interest. I enjoy reading the forum on your site every day at work!

Aug 28th 'Tyres' from Paul B Garrish pgarrish@csc.com

John, conrats as always on the site - great to see the web being used properly bringing disparate (desperate ?) folk together. For info, a mob called FWR in London will ship 2 rear and 1 front Azaro 2 to your door for £199 all in. Sounds good to me (especially if you've seen my post on the forum - Tale Of Woe). Website is www.fwr.co.uk  ( no I don't work for them either!) Go to 'Packet of 3 deal', Pack 3 fits us SV riders I think. Cheers, Paul

Aug 26th 'Rust under the tank' from Alun Watson alun.watson@xtra.co.nz

Hi John   The Subject say's it all my two month old sv650s k2 has rust under the tank. I asked the dealer if I could have a new tank ... no was the answer :o( but they'd swap it for the one off the demo :o) Yay I thought ... Well they took off the demo's tank and found the same surface rust on the demos tank   It's not all bad news, the tank is being repaired under warranty but I can't ride my bike over that period ... and I have to put up with a Speed Triple for the next couple of days ... oh well I guess that it might be a good idea for sv owners to check under their tank's or have it checked at the next service.   Alun This in not uncommon. I had a shock when I first looked at the underside of my tank. There was a light rust all over and especially around the fuel level sensor. I now keep a coat of WD40 on the underside and things seem to have stabilised. There was a thread on tank rust recently in the forum from Nick Pillanger, I think. Nick reported that the drain pipe for rain water collecting in the fuel filler recess was rusted to the extent that a hole had appeared and as a result water was getting into the fuel. I'm not too sure where the corrosion occured as the pipe runs internally from the filler recess to the rear of the tank where is passes into the outside world. You can just see the pipe with the filler open. I checked mine and it looks fine, but I suspect that the pipe rots from within, probably because it has no paint to protect it and the water flows straight over naked steel. I might get the WD40 out again and attach the straw tube that comes with it. I should be then able to squirt some oil down the pipe from the filler end. Might help to keep the rust at bay a little longer. John

Aug 22nd from Kev Wheatley Wheatleykr@aol.com

Fitting the Carnells (powerbronze) undertray was a big job. The instructions were rubbish. I started off by removing the tail fairing. Then I removed all the tools and the battery. Next I removed the big lump of undersaet black plastic. Having read the instructions, I cut off the battery tray and refitted it. I them offered up the undertray. I soon realised that the underseat storage space was completely wasted. I read the instructions some more. I them set about cutting off enough of the mudguard area in an attempt to be able to refit it. With a dremill this is no problem. I bolted the back underseat section back in and re-joined it to the battery tray with two zip ties. I continued trimming until I could mount the undertray directly underneath. The undertray is bolted with the supplied plastic nut and bolts to the battery tray at the front and screwed to the tail fairing to its two lugs and clips at the back. I also had to remount the ECU. I had to cut out the little clips that hold the rubber for the tool roll, which is not positioned transversly under the rear seat retaining bar. Lastly I fitted cut the tail unit to fit flush mounted indicators. A small numberplate makes it look really trick. Was it worth it? Yes for £30, plus indicators £12, plate £15, and a couple of sets of bullet connectors £2. Second time around it would be a doddle. You've just got to be brave.

Aug 17th from Steve LEMON steve@sdl12.fsnet.co.uk

Hi John. For info have just fitted a set of Earls lines to the bike two line front and single rear with all fittings £85. All stainless steel fittings. They are well worth the money and the braking performance is superb. Wholly recommended. at www.earls.co.uk  Service was helpful and friendly and the hoses arrived at the front door within a couple of days.   Also you may want to add www.banditmania.co.uk  to the list of contacts. They do loads of SV parts including bolts bodywork and all sorts.   Great site. Keep it up. Jiff. I thought Banditmania was listed in the links page but I'm not certain. I'll take a look...John

Aug 6th From  Peter Kielland kielland@visionary-technology.com

Hi John: I'm a Canadian SVS owner who had real problems adapting to the bike's low clipons ("oh my aching back and wrists").    Being a machinist and part time inventor, I came up with some novel and inexpensive clipon risers that I'd like to show other SVS riders.  I've written an article describing their development and would appreciate it if you'd post it in your "Articles" section.  You can link directly to the article at: http://members.rogers.com/kielland/SVRider%20article.htm  I've also created a web site aimed at commercializing the idea:  http://www.cliponrisers.com I'd appreciate it if you could also include this website in your "Links" section.    I'd like to hear feedback from your readers ... both cheers and jeers.   Thanks  These risers do look ingenious. Take a look ....John

Aug 2nd from Sharon Crawford bikerchick@ukbikers.net

Hi John   Great site by the way.  I looked through your images and saw you don't have an SV like mine there, so thought I'd send you a picture.   Hope you like it   Sharon. I had to burst Sharon's bubble I'm afraid, sorry. I had seen this image before and dug it out of Catalog 11. The related article was in April 01 edition but sent in by a different owner. I assumed that Sharon had bought the bike from this owner. Not so according to Sharon, the paintjob is similar but it's not the same bike. None of this matters, it's still a lovely looking machine....John

Aug 2nd from Stephen Spiteri sspiteri@mps.com.mt

Does the Bandit Round Headlight fit the Naked SV? I was wondering if the Bandit's round headlight unit fits the SV's. I dislike the black plastic part mostly and think the chromed Bandit one looks nicer and more the business. Has anybody done this? And what about those mickey mouse clocks? Can they be replaced with the bandit items? Sounds possible in theory, anyone else tried this?...John

Aug 2nd  from Graham Painter graham.painter@ntlworld.com

Hi, just a quick email to send you the pics of my new SV, it's pretty standard as you can see apart from the twin renegades & seat hump, but beautiful nonetheless I'm sure you'll agree. I've only had it (her?) a week so I'm sure things will change sooner or later.   I've seen the subject covered quite extensively on the forum but what would you recommend I do to calm down the two pogo sticks holding my front wheel?   I replied to Graham separately, but feel free to offer advice if you wish..John

Aug 2nd From Steve RealNeuneu@hotmail.com

Good morning, Can you put this picture of my new Sv on your site ? Thanks. Steve Short and sweet..John

Aug 1st

I've been playing with the look of the site again, sorry. July turned into a busy month one way and another. My SV celebrated it's 3rd birthday and it's first MOT. No problems with test I'm happy to say. Discovered a great bike pub on the A454 between Wolverhampton and Bridgenorth call the Wheel. I can see that being a regular haunt. The highlight of the month must be the MCN day out at Bruntingthorpe. I won't say more about that because it's well covered in the articles section.
