June 27th Greetings from Italy from Maurizio Tuccioome mauison@tiscalinet.it

Hi john! I'm an Italian SV rider. Sorry for my English! I send you an image of my SV, fitted with: Road Racing shield and rear fender (made in Aluminum, not in plastic), Ergal anodized bar( in gold), Leovince complete exhaust system, Jet kit & open air filter, Pirelli Dragon Evo Corsa tyres, forks Kit by White Power. All I need now is solo seat cover by Pyramid Plastics, but i can't find it in Italy :_-(. Bye! Maurizio Tuccio Messina Sicily

June 26th Some tyre feedback from Simon Bradford (suzuki_dude_650@yahoo.com)

John,   After reading through comments about BT010s for the SV, I just had to go out and buy some  - my local dealer (Geoff Walker, Wycombe Bucks: 01494 511551) suggested BT020s are they last longer, but I stuck with the BT010s and I'm glad I did. Only wish I could have had some sooner - the bike handles so much better - it's like being on rails. It can feel like that just renewing the tyres with the same type. You don't notice degredation as the tyre wears until you replace it. John

June 24th SV track day info from David Carrington (dsc@bushinternet.com)

Hi John, Wondered if you would mind posting the below message in the current data.  After posting the details of the SV track day on the Forum I was very pleased with the response and the bookings are still coming in! For those who did not see my post its at Llandow circuit near Cardiff on August 14th. The cost is only £60 for the day, there is no limit on track time and we will have the whole circuit to ourselves!!! It should be a great day out, James Holland is coming with some seriously tricked up SV's and there's even talk of someone from Performance Bikes coming along. There are still a few places left, anyone interested can contact me at dsc@bushinternet.com  don't leave it too late though places are going fast Best Regards Dave Contact Dave if you're interested, sounds good to me.John

June 21st from Reinier Barendrecht (Ankreinier@cs.com) on the Cover shot fairing mystery

Dear John , the fairing of the yellow SV is a Ducati fairing (you can find it in your picture gallery, and also at www.svrider.com .) I know , because a year ago I was looking for a little fairing for my Sv and intensively checked both your website and your american cousin. Finally I bought the Monster S4 fairing ,which looks perfect. Greetings Reinier Barendrecht, The Netherlands (red svn, monster fairing,WP frontsprings(super))

June 19th Some useful info on stickers for the SV650 (decals) from Michael Eustace (michael.eustace@talk21.com)

Hi John, Here's a new link: http://www.tapeworks.com  and goto: http://www.tapeworks.com/Pages/3035.html  Tapeworks make aftermarket stickers for motorcycles. The second URL is the SV650 section of their site. You may also want to remove the www.tigcraft.com  link since they no longer sell/make conversion kits (if they ever did?)  for the SV yes it has gone quiet on that front. See their website for details. Best regards, Michael

June 18th SV "retirement" hoax info from Gavin McDowell gmcdowel@traffordcentre.co.uk

Sorry to email you direct but the board appears to be down.   re the above first posted by "Hammy". Its a hoax. Or a bad joke.   If you want to have a look go to www.ridersite.ws , forum, general chat, "SV rider Baiting".   I bet Renegade will be dead happy if they lose orders because of this.   And I notice the site carry's a link to the above site.  Regards Gavin Interesting, I did wonder if someone was trolling John

June 14th further info on the fairing questions raised earlier on this page from Miguel Blomme (miguel.blomme@pandora.be)

Hello,   the blue undertray is made by Ermax (www.ermax.fr) and the blue fairing is made by poly26 i think , i'm not sure (www.poly26.com). I hope this helps you :-) . if you have any other things to ID don't hesitate to email me.   greetz   Miguel Blomme

I had a look at the Poly26 site and couldn't see the fairing shown below. It didn't help that the site is in French only, however there were some interesting mini fairings so it's worth a look. Thanks Miguel. John

June 12th Jason ( JasHDahi@BTInternet.com ) was kind enough to scan and send this article to me. There's quite a lot of information here. I thought it worth adding to the site as a guide to those often asked questions from people thinking of buying an SV650. I've added it to the Images section. I hope it's useful. Many thanks to Jason for taking the time and trouble to scan it for me. John

Also. I've changed the site search tool. It seems better than the previous offering. Courtesy of Freefind.

June 10th Lowering the Sv from Mark + Cathy Glasswell marcus@glasswell.freeserve.co.uk

Hi John, Great site have been looking at it for a while now since just before I bought the wife her SV and mainly was all the feed back and reports that persuaded us to Go for the SV, we were considering a 600 hornet.   Anyway the wife is short in stature(vertically challenged that is!) and was really on her tip toes when at stand still this caused a few spills (actually using 1 lever/200miles!) using your web links found a lowering kit from Wild Hair they don't do orders over the web so phoned them to be told that they get them from Germany. Phone call to Germany to find they want about £100.00!!!!!!!!!!!! I then found your jhs link and found the lowing links for less then £25.00 yippee.   20 minutes to fit drop forks thru' by 10mm and off we go.   Attached are some photos to show the difference (the pipe is a scorpion BTW) to use as you wish if you want any more info email me Regards Mark Thanks Mark, this query does crop up from time to time, so I'm sure it'll be useful to others.

June 6th Catalog 19 created in the images section. Rideout 2002 link moved to images also

June 6th from David.Forster another view on Race Tech emulators.

Hello again. I have just read the post about the race tech emulators. I bought mine 2 years ago with the springs from the same source (PDQ) the difference being mine cost over £200. They are right at the shop about the springs the standard SV ones are the worst I have ever had. The bike was under sprung & under damped when raking it through the gears changing up from 4 to 5 the bike was all over the road making it dangerous (I suppose raking it the way I was was dangerous to) as well as the terrible handling. I even took it back to the dealer in fact I think I posted that on this site a couple of years ago. Any way the race tech stuff sorted it out. I still think the bike needs a steering damper because when accelerating hard at 80 + the front skip up at the slightes bump in the road you may not have this problem on the S model with the different seating position. Thanks for the feedback Dave.

June 6th from James Howard

John could you please post these for me. This is the sv650 with the eclipse saddlebags and some general hooligan pics. Thanks, James

June 6th from Simon Bradford

Hi John,   I'm relaying this to you in case it can help someone else.   I was doing my Honda MAC advanced last week (well recommend it) when my SV backfired a couple of times, spluttered, then picked up as normal. Didn't think too much of it, so stopped for lunch. After lunch, I went to disarm the veto evo and nothing happened - no alarm light, no response from the transmitter, tried to start her and although I have power, starter motor wouldn't turn. Called Datatool, who though it could be a faulty earth. I bumped the bike and she started fine. So I had a bike that ran only if pushed.   After a couple of days, the alarm came back on, but the battery was flat (never had a flat battery in 2 years). I got her booked in to the dealer, turned out the fault was the starter motor relay, not the alarm. A week on, she's fine.    I thought it was the obvious and that wasn't the case. I've enclosed a pic I took for the WSB at Silverstone in May.   Great site, I love the bike, although I am looking at buying a VFR 800 soon.  Is the VFR the natural step up from an SV? John

June 6th Some answers to questions I asked yesterday, thanks to you all for replying. John

From  Garry Ellam

John, I'm fairly sure the flyscreen in the picture is the same as mine.  It is from  www.redracingparts.it .  It is carbon fibre and costs around £110.  I have colour matched mine (red) but it looks good as is.  To be honest, it doesn't do much for windblast unless you tuck right in behind it (I've got lower bars, which help).  However, it looks great (very similar to a Monster screen). Regarding the Azaro 45/46s, done 1500 miles now and they're down by about 1.5 mm.  I estimate 6000 from the rear (not quite the 8000 for a GSXR 1000 claimed!).  They grip really well wet or dry, tip into corners beautifully and feel stable at all speeds.  thoroughly recommended!

From Abigail

I saw the picture and decided that is the tray that I'm going to get when I buy my sv650s later this year. So I went on a mission and I managed to find the undertray in question. Its from Bandit Mania www.banditmania.co.uk/bodywork.htm  and costs £135.00 ouch! All the best Abigail (damn do I want to go out and buy an sv right now) I think the undertray is an Ermax (see page 18 in image catalog19) John

From Benjamen

the fairing you want ID'd is from Red Racing Parts www.redracingparts.it  they have other cool Carbon Fiber parts too! and the undertail kit is a German part I've seen at a few different sites. Here's one my side of the "pond" that sells both the undertail and mini fairing http://www.whaccessories.com/SV%20650%20Accessories.htm  Best regards, Benjamen

June 5th from Nick kuskin

Just bought a 2000 SV with 4300km and a oval Ixil stainless can on it. After driving it more than around the dealers neighbourhood and then trying to start it the next day, and the next, and the next, it only starts on the front cylinder with rapid backfiring. Could this be a jet problem? Also the bike is a little less than inspiring in 1st and 2nd gear, maybe I'm only running on one cylinder, but once it warms up the backfiring goes away and it seems...OK, not way underpowered. But given I'm not very familiar with the bike it's hard to tell. Also I'm moving to the UK from Belgium in July. Any idea about mods I'll need to make?

Nick.  The backfire is caused by unburnt fuel in the exhaust, the question is why is there unburnt fuel? Start by checking the spark plugs, fit new ones. Check for any wiring damage on the rear coil, even a small knick on the HT lead can give this sort of grief. A new freer breathing exhaust may lead to a weaker fuel air mix, but I'm not sure that it will cause a backfire. When was the air filter last cleaned, a blocked filter would lead to a richer mixture. As you can tell, there can be many reasons for a mis-fire, so if anyone else has any ideas please feel free to email Nick or me. As for mods, the only thing I can think of is the headlight on the SV-s but as you have the SV that shouldn't be a problem. The exhaust will require a BS kite mark to keep the Police and MOT tester happy.  HTH John

June 5th from JasH

I was surprised to not see anything about this article on the site, in case everyone missed it here’s a tatty scan that may or not be reproducible? JasH Thanks for this Jash. I hadn't seen the article and I'm sure others haven't. Click on the eyes to d/l (350kb) John

June 5th from Richard Fuller

Hi there John, just thought you may want to add this to the rider sites link page. www.ride-out.com  This is a site for rides, but it is only for the North-West of England. Non of this ride-outs only in London or abroad, just N/W. They have about 250 members and there is quite a few SV's in there including Me, and TONYP. S'up to you!!!  I have added this to the links section. John

June 5th Lots of questions, very few answers. Help needed.

I've had a couple of emails asking about the small faring on this months cover shot. I've no idea who it's made by and a trawl through the archives didn't help. Does anyone know, if so please tell me and I post the answer here. John

Here's another ID required. Who makes this undertray.

Lastly, can you ID this fairing!

June 1st from john.rodriguez

The SV's a great bike but it's let down a little by its suspension, not least the forks, which being damper rod-flavour are rather crude. I didn't find much in the way of opinions about the Race Tech Gold cartridge emulators until I got an email from a chap in America who said he'd made a grillion mods to his bike and they were the best by miles. Right, a trip to PDQ and £110 later I gave them a whirl. The emulators take over compression damping control using a spring-loaded one-way valve; the rebound is adequately handled by the damper rods.

Fitting wasn't too tough. I measured my preload sag and cut the spacer tube to match, giving about 30mm sag (optimum). I also set the emulator spring preload to the road-standard 2 turns. The preload Allen bolt is a stupid Imperial size, I borrowed a key that fit but I should have noted the size, sorry. The emulators drop on top of the damper rods (after you've drilled out the compression damping holes) under the springs. Plop in 2x490ml 20W oil and you're away.

I think I expected a He-man-like transformation into rigid forks, which didn't happen; they still felt fairly soft. I took it for a test ride and was pretty impressed with the difference; there was real subtlety in the compression damping, and I was surprised the speeds I was coming out of some of the bends. Brake dive was improved a bit, but overall much better control when you need it, like in the right-left-right of roundabouts. I even tried with a pillion, expecting the worst, and they were great; I think I need the fork preload adjusters to deal with that much extra weight. It hasn't got out of shape yet so I'll leave the settings as they are; you don't need rigid suspension to ride fast, and I'm used to older bikes. All in all, money well spent; the only thing better was ditching the rubbish Metz front for a Bridgestone 010.

Any questions, mail me if you like; also be interested to hear from anyone else who has tried them. Johnny Rod

PS If you do the fitting yourself then it's not too costly (you need a pillar drill and something to cut the spacer tubes squarely). The forks still feel a bit soft but they're not out-of-control soft, just work properly, and I can fly down back-roads now. I can't be arsed to fiddle with the adjustment too much cos you have to remove the fork top, hoik out the spacer, washer, and fork spring, then fish out the emulator; it's small, shiny, covered in oil and you need three hands to adjust it. Repeat for the other leg, decide you overadjusted.... PDQ m/cs reckon the springs (£66) are more crap than the damping, but I'm not so sure.

June 1st

June already, how quickly the year passes. Not much to report this month. My SV has just come up for its 12k mile service. I'll perform this task myself as there isn't too much to do, just an oil change and some filters to be replaced. Kev and I have a couple more trips planned, Cosford airshow on June 9th and maybe the Motogp at Donnington on July 14th weather permitting. John
