Jul 25 - Hello

Hi John,  Here are some piccies of my SV for everyone to see! next mods  will probably be a hugger and tidying up the mudguard but I think it  looks lovely as it is for now. If anyone is ever up in manchester, we  should meet up for a spin!

Amanda M

Jul 24 - Follow up from Andy (see Jul 22 'SK3 SV650 modded already')

Nope it didn't take long to start the mods, the bike looks so great but that mudguard just had to go.  I used a kit from Ermax which consisted of a plate and indicator bracket with mini indys and a triangular bracket which was about £30.  Its not the easiest thing to fit and you need to make a few mods yourself such to use the existing number plate light.  The only problem with this mod is that when you remove the mudguard, you get a gap around the rear of the existing undertray which needs filling.  I still need to fill mine and am a bit stuck as to what to use - if anyone has any idea's, please share them with me (Andy.Heppleston@compusys.co.uk) as I do not really want to spend £130 at the moment on an undertray just to fill a quarter inch gap.  Masking tape is currently doing a fine job!!!

The seat cowl is a Suzuki part (£80) and the only other thing is the mini indys at the front which are iridium coated and look really nice (see pic).

Attached are some more pics showing the bits I've done, as well as one for your bikes in nice places, hardly Niagara but by the Thames at Runnymede!

Jul 24 - Greetings from Philadelphia

Hi John,

Truly enjoy the site. I have included some pictures of my new '03 SV650 with a National Cycle F-16 Series shield. Having a blast riding it!

Jul 22 'SK3 SV650 modded already'

Hi John

Just wanted to say what a great site you're running - keep up the fine work.

Although I've been riding for years, its all been off road and its only this year that I did my test and went out and got my little beauty as pictured. It's a fantastic bike for either the experienced or newer biker and instils confidence with every mile, and just look at the looks - especially now I've got rid of the huge rear mudguard and got a seat cowl - now all I need is a hugger and a new can, the one it comes with is so big... and too quiet.

I am so glad I went for the SV instead of anything else.

Jul 22 'Letter from Sydney' from John Strecker.

Hi John, I have recently become a SV owner and love it, just thought I would drop a coupla pics after a ride through the Royal National Park South of Sydney to Stanwell Tops, obviously being the middle of winter it was a cold grey rainy day.

Best Regards John

Can't see much of the park John, some damn bike in the way ;-) Nice photo's though. Got any more showing more of the background scenery. Perhaps we should have a competition for the best photo of an SV with some sort of monument or famous landmark in the background. How about an SV going over Niagra falls.

Jul 22 'Home made undertray' from Gary.

Hi john its Gary from sv650.tk, just thought id send u a pic of the undertray i built from ally plate and to thank zunkus for giving me the template to do it with, i added leds for the plate light to make it look different from most, and have written a guide on how to do it for anyone who is interested in a slightly different look to their sv

cheers Weegaz

Looks a really neat job, well done and it's a good testimony to Stephen Spiteri (Zunkus)

Jul 20 'Impulse power'

Bought my SV a year ago on impulse before I'd even learned to ride a motorbike, but i have no regrets! I've done a few bits to it since.
Thanx Gina Yashere

Hi John,

Hi, here are the pics of my sv. I hope they're ok I will get more pics eventually of my fully faired sv with flames in flip flop colour. Dean Phillips.

Jul 16 'Trouble in Portugal' from Nelson Jorge Campos Baptista Piçarra

Hello John!! I’m a Portuguese SV650 2001 rider....Probably you know that we have a Portuguese SV site www.sv650pt.net  But the reason that I’m sending this mail it’s because a problem on my bike. Since I brought my SV (September of 2001) that this abnormal situation happens, lose engine coolant (see the file). My SV dealer just doesn’t know what to do…… Have you detect any situation similar in the U.K.?? How can I solve this problem?? In Portugal only 2 SV have this problem and they have near serial number….

Best regards Nelson Piçarra P.S. – Sorry about my poor English……

I've sent my opinons to Nelson, but if anyone else could suggest a solution, I'm sure Nelson would be keen to hear. Contact him at nelson_picarra@netvisao.pt

Jul 15 'Renegade news' from Jorge.

Good morning John, Just finished the design and tests on our Semi Full Twin High Level System, I must say that we are very happy with the results and very much recommend the our Airkit to go with it, as they were developed in conjunction. The performance was amazing, around 7 to 8 bhp a low to mid range and around 5 to 6 at top end. We found that the new injection system adjusts to the changes as Duck to water :) With the addition of our Semi full we have completed the range for the 03 SV650. Graphs and photos can be seen on our site www.renegade-products.com , but here is a preview. Take care.

Best regards, Jorge

Jul14 'The Doctor makes a call' from Julian Lane

I'm new to biking, having just passed my test. Been driving a car for the last 20 years, and only just discovered the joys of 2 wheeled transport. Loved the look of the SV the first time I saw it, then read the magazine reviews, and that was it, I had to have one. I work as a GP, so am scaring all the little old ladies I have to do home visits on, now that I turn up on the bike!! Excellent web site, loads of useful bits, and great pics. Cheers, Julian

Jul 11 'Wayne Campbell's End to End trip'

Wayne completed his adventure and his tale is told here  He has managed to raise £200 for Hope House in the process. Well done that man.

Looks damn good to me. John

Jul 10 'Video clips' from Barry

Dear John,
With the British round of Moto GP this weekend I thought I'd give everyone a quick sample of what the Proton KR5 bike sounds like, the video clips are all from the Le Mans GP in May. They were taken on a cheap (£25) digital video camera (www.nisis.com). I've also added a clip with a Ducati, Suzuki and Yamaha on, the sounds of these 4-stroke bikes are awesome.
Barry (mariner)

I've placed the clips in the goodies section

Jul 10 'LED tail light bulbs' from Simon Gosling

Hi John,
Just thought I would mention that I just bought two LED 'bulbs' for my SV. They are a regular bayonet fitting but instead of a glass bulb there is a small circuit-board with six superbright LED's soldered to it. When the rear light is turned on three of the LED's illuminate, when the brake is applied the other three come on as well. They are brighter,  illuminate quicker, shockproof, consume a fifth of the power, generate no heat  and last 100,000 hours. Some places are selling these for 15quid a go but I  got some from  Hein-Gerike in Harrow for £4.50 each. ( they do mail order i think!) The really cool thing about them is that they show up individually so you can  see two rear lights side by side instead of one big one. I saw a couple of  the bikes on the rideout had them and have been looking for them ever since.  Please pass this on to anyone enquiring about them.
Regards,
Simon Gosling

Jul 8 'Lydden part 1' from Dan Skinner

Hi John, Here's some photos as promised..... sending from my work email because I can't bear to spend hours in hotmail on this.... Hope I haven't sent too many - if you'd like anything different, just shout.

The filenames should be fairly self-explanatory, but here's who's who:

  • Dan (Slenver, me) - all black
  • Pete (petetong) - Blue with blue/white lid
  • Andy (andy) - other blue
  • Mark (rictus01) - black/yellow

Cheers John, Dan Sounds like a grand day out! Some damn good photos too. Just noticed the site sticker in Andy's screen. :-)

Jul 8 'What to do if stopped by plod' from Martyn Daniel

Hi John, Glad you enjoyed the rideout to Colwyn Bay. The Scouse crowd managed to get into the meeting, and what waste of time it was!

In answer to the question that the cops wouldn't answer, I have found what could be the answer on one of the MCN message boards:

If stopped by plod, for a roadside check of your bike, not speeding etc. try the following. Tell plod that unders Schedule 2, section 67 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 that you want a Deferred test.

The test has to take place within 7 days at a time and place agreed with plod. Your home garage at 23:30 on a Friday is a nice time, when police resources are not needed for other things.

The police can only ignore this request in 2 circumstances. 1. if you have been involved in an accident and 2 "where in the opinion of a constable the vehicle is apparently so defective that it ought not to be allowed to proceed without a test being carried out, he may require the test to be carried out forthwith". So they can only do this if your bike is clearly a danger to you or other road users. Exhausts and reflectors would not count. Bald tyres, bent frame, shagged brakes would.

The problem with this is it actually mucks about the constabulary where you live NOT the area that pulled you over. So North Wales constabulary can keep stopping folks from England and our forces get the call outs.

 http://www.hmso.gov.uk/acts/acts1988/Ukpga_19880052_en_10.htm

The above link actually takes you to the part of the act that gives you this right.  Although I'm not too sure how many people actually have the guts to quote the law to a gnarled traffic cop!

Went to Rugby yesterday (Sheene tribute), and what a waste of time that was! Nothing there apart from a few stalls, a couple of old racebikes belonging to Mr Sheene, and nothing else really! Only stayed for about two hours, which was enough time to see everything twice! No real place to pay any kind of respect to Barry. Quite sad really. No wonder it wasn't given the "official" seal by the Sheene family.

I like the new forum! Hope all is well with you, and thanks for getting a pic of my Honda on the site! Catch ya soon, Martyn

Jul 8 'Boy Racers' also from Martyn Daniel

Welsh boy racers face car confiscation. Police in Wrexham, North Wales, are threatening to confiscate the cars of young drivers who 'cruise' around the town's retail park at night. Complaints have been made by local residents, and customers of the Burger King outlet at the site, and the police say they will now seize the cars of anyone seen driving recklessly or performing dangerous manoeuvres around the car parks. There will be a £167 charge to recover each car, with £12 for each day it is impounded. (BBC Online). (sounds fair to me John)

Jul 6 New Forum news

The new forum is up and running. I've done some minor tweaking and testing and all seems fine. I've added some new boards that some of you have been keen to see. The bad news is that you will have to re-register, the good news is that there is so much more you can do ;-) go to the normal forum page to access. Have fun.

I'll leave both boards running side by side for a short time. When I'm happy that the new forum is running fine, I'll make the old board read-only, so it can still be used for research.

Thanks to Steven Nance for providing the kit and the time to set this up. Remember the site stickers helped a little towards this. John

Jul 4 'Mobile Phone theme' from Alyn Sparkes

Hi John,  The Sony Ericsson T68i seems a very popular phone at the moment (probably  'cause it's free now). Having just got one, I thought I'd put together an SV  theme for it and share it with anyone who wants it.  Regards,  Alyn Sparkes

Jul 4 'Incident at Kielder' from Dave Forster

John would your stickers cover up this scratch. No seriously I came off at over 100 mph last bank holiday Monday up at Kielder Northumberland. It's  been a tough year at Kielder I know of at least a 8 people who have came off  there since April & heard about a dozen or so more. Bikes ok so am I. Got a  new footrest hanger £31 from Suzuki & a new brand tank in a the box with all  of the factory seals in place off Ebay for £62 + £8 postage. It only needs  headlight rim, front brake lever, mirror & some fatboy handle bars. The  radiator is twisted but ok so I leave it until cheap one turns up. Myself  twisted & strained just about every thing Knee wrist & thumb are still sore  6 - 7 weeks later. Leather jacket & Helmet wrecked still it could (should)  have been a lot worse.

I guess you were dead lucky, hit a tree at that speed and you don't get up again. I wonder why Kielder is so bad this year?

Jul 4 'Gel Seats and things' from Greg Wallis

Hi John, Just read your article on the Wales trip and I have to agree about double white lines, they're painted with the average car/driver in mind and often by council anti-car officials (doubtless cyclists the lot of them!) and where you have good visibility it's not unreasonable I suggest to interpret their meaning as we do with the national speed limit. It would be interesting to get some unbiased viewpoints from fair-minded police motorcyclists on this matter. (It's just a question of common sense, which is sometimes sadly lacking in some people, so we all get treated like idiots. In some places I found the reverse to be true, broken white lines right on top of blind bends. As bikers we would or should consider overtakes even more carefully, the consequences of getting it wrong are far more serious for us than the oncoming car)

As for the gel seat, well I also feel that the seat is too hard (not nearly as hard as the new SVs - ouch!). There's the choice of the Suzuki gel seat or the option of dismantling the seat and fitting a gel pad instead. I intend to do this for my seat and also for the pillion (my wife will be most grateful I assure you!) for which Suzuki don't offer a replacement option. There's an interesting article on this http://www.itrocks.com/motorcycles/gel_seat.htm (if you haven't seen it) on www.SVRider.com   this month, together with photos and links. The suppliers I've found are:

http://www.thepropad.com/propad/inserts.html

http://www.saddlemen.com/gelpads.html

http://www.motorbike-seats.co.uk/

The last one is a guy called Melvin (based in Coventry) who fits the gel pad for you. It's a different type of gel to the others (softer) and he charges £35 per pad plus £45 fitting but if you send him the seat plus the pillion pad he still only charges £45 for fitting them both. I think I'll be trying him out in a week or so. He apparently does a same day turn around which is good news. Regards, Greg Wallis.

Thanks for that Greg, I'll take a look.

Jul 4 'North Wales protest ride out' from Marc Reeves

John, Glad you made it to A&D after we all met up at the Ponderosa. All in all it  was a great rideout and I was glad I went over to the Cafe because the  nant-y-garth pass has some lovely twisty sections to throw the SV round (we used this road on the 2002 rideout).  I've waited till now to write to you because I wanted to find out what the  local press had to say.....as usual very little comment on how well behaved  we all were!! The headline in one paper was that the police are not  changing any of their tactics, and still want "prat" bikers sorted out.  Maximum waiting time is to be 10 minutes (we'll see) and will still be  fining us for exhausts, plates etc.  Apparently there were about 8 crashes that day and the police helicopter was  deployed to the scene of an accident in Dolgellau (well it spent some time  looking over us all on the ride along the A55). I think their time would be  better spent finding out why crashes happen in the first place.......idiot  car drivers persisting to travel at 30 to 40 mph in 60 limits and frustrated  drivers pulling out to overtake them without looking to see what's behind  them (I think this is the key, the frustration of sitting in a convoy behind these twits is immense, resulting in some really dodgy overtakes)

Next ride out for me is a trip to Donington to watch the MotoGP, then its a > track day at Oulton Park...just hope it doesn't rain this year!! Cheers  Marc

PS its me who had the SV with the 2wheeljunkie fairing

Jul 4 'Home made mirror-indicators' from Barry Walker

John, After a recent visit to the boy racers Nirvana; Halfords, I spotted these adhesive LED indicator repeaters. As I'd recently had an incident when some one claimed that they didn't see my mini indicators, resulting in a low speed spill, I decided that anything to increase visibility must be good. As the pictures show I've fitted these repeaters, they do increase visibility but I can't decide if they are cool or naff! Fitting is fairly straightforward but does require a 5mm hole drilling in the side panel under the mirror mounting boot, the adhesive used to secure the repeaters is very good, and has survived six weeks of searing sunshine and torrential downpours. The price is £19.99 for this size and £29.99 for a bigger size from Halfords. Best Regards Barry Walker (Mariner)

Look fine to me.

Jul 4 'SV2003' from Jorge at Renegade.

Hi John, better change that machine of yours :) just tested the new model and oh boy, does she have power, fitted a low level and the results were good :) not only that but played with the airbox and guess what, even more power all across the range but that mid range is wow, got around 83 crank, will send your charts soon. Best Regards Jorge www.renegade-products.com

How about letting me have your's for long term evaluation ;-)  I guess my SV is now an antique, it's four years old next week.

Jul 4 'Our So Cal Gathering' from Paul

Hi John, First of all, sorry for the attachment size, but I think it's worth it ;)  It's a collage of photos from our second annual SV Gathering in Southern California. About 150 bikers showed up, and around 80 SVs all gathered together in one place.

Love the information on your site! thanks, Paul

Jul 1 'My new arse' from Tim Mather tim@hoose69.freeserve.co.uk

Hi John, Well I finally got round to finishing off the plastic surgery. I fitted my new 8x6 plate and mini indicators to complete the job of cutting the monstrous mudguard that used to be on the back. I am a very happy bloke and the rear now looks very slim and shapely. I had to remount the little black box of tricks further into the boot but only by about an inch. Apart from that it was just an attack on the undertray with a hacksaw and finished with a sharp Stanley and wet and dry paper. I have loads of photos of the finished product so if anyone wants some feel free to ask. Cheers Timbo (TimSVS)

Nice Arse. Can I say that to a bloke. Depends on the bloke really I suppose!

Jul 1 'SVS pic from Oregon' from John Boyd

Hi John, Love your site man! I thought I'd send you a pic of me enjoying my SV and the wonderful roads here in Oregon. Keep your leather off the pavement! ;)

John Boyd, ¦¬) '97 F3 '02 SV650s Clackamas,

Oregon

http://home.attbi.com/~cbrfreak/

July 1st.

Stickers are selling well. I’m down to my last 10 of the site stickers. I’ve altered the logo slightly to include the new shape SV for the next batch. The body stickers are selling too, the Brushed Aluminium has sold out, but that’s due mainly to the fact that I only had 3 items in the first place.

My biggest ride this month was the Ponderosa protest meeting on the 29th. I went along with Daryl and met up with a few of you at the café including Dave, Jo, Gavin and Paul. See the photos here. The rideout plans had altered slightly in that it now started from A&D motors in Denbigh. There was quite a crowd when we arrived at Denbigh and it reminded me of queuing for the IOM ferry, quite a sight. We left Denbigh at 12 and had a police escort all the way to Colwyn bay. Roads were closed to allow us passage and we got lots of claps and cheers from passers-by. At Colwyn we drove into the police HQ and took over their car park. I guess there were 300+ bikes of all shapes and sizes.  The weather was glorious and we were cooked, so a quick rest under the shade of a tree was welcome.  Daryl, his daughter and I then set off for Bets-y-coed. It was very busy with tourists when we arrived but we found a place to park and got some fish’n chips and tried to cool off. Finally we set off for home, riding along the A470 and A458 back to Shrewsbury. The only fly in the ointment was all the bloody caravans and the ridiculous number of double white lines.  I did a couple of overtakes on the double whites, nothing dangerous, but frustration was getting to me. I got a toot from a car driver on one occasion but these people don’t realise that these lines are based on the average cars performance, not a bike.  The cynic in me also wonders if the overkill on these lines is deliberate!  My bum was killing me by the time I got home, how much are those gel seats?

Not a lot else to report this month, except that the bathroom rebuild is coming on nicely but slowly, not surprising when I keep going out on the bike ;-)
